Hello hairs! This sweet young dog came to see us for chronic tearing from both eyes, aka epiphora. Can you spot the eyelashes that are erupting from the eyelid margins and touching the surface of the eye? He has them in all 4 eyelids! This is called distichiasis, when confused eyelashes are emerging from the meibomian gland openings that line the lids. It is common in many breeds. Sometimes it is not bothersome, but some dogs experience irritation and epiphora, or even corneal ulcers. There are numerous options to address the hairs - simply plucking does not prevent recurrence. This pup underwent a cryoepilation procedure, meaning we froze the hair follicle through the backside of the eyelid to kill it, and then plucked the hairs. This permanently solves the problem and has a very brief recovery period with no sutures. He should be back to living his best life asap!
